Dinnerly Review

Who is Dinnerly?

Dinnerly is a relatively new meal kit delivery service, having launched in July of 2017 and serving meals to six states. By September, Dinnerly grew rapidly to include another 23 states across the United States of America. From California to Rhode Island, Dinnerly offers quick meals for even the most picky of eaters.

The meals are simple to prepare and take approximately 30 minutes or less to make. As of 2019, Dinnerly offers two different plans depending on the number of servings you would like, either 2 or 4. Dinnerly also claims that its meal kits come with “quality ingredients like grass-fed ground beef and antibiotic-free chicken.”

Each meal kit that is delivered by Dinnerly consists of only 6 ingredients, prepared for you ahead of time so that the minimum amount of work is required on your part to get them ready. In addition to this, you can download or print digital recipe cards from their website via their account area to see what they will be serving ahead of time.

What is Dinnerly Like?

Dinnerly recipes are generally simple affairs without any embellishment or expensive ingredients. As well as helping to keep costs down, this is great if you are looking to provide meals that not only feel home-cooked but are. On top of this, these easy recipes are great for teaching people how to cook if you aren’t familiar with your way around the kitchen, or you would like to teach the kids.

As stated, because Dinnerly meals are so simple, there are fewer ingredients overall - six or fewer, in fact. All of the recipes can be made in 30 minutes or less, so if you’re short on time then Dinnerly may be a really useful service for you. If you’re stuck in a cooking rut and find yourself cooking the same five or six recipes week after week, Dinnerly would be a great way to add quick, easy to make meals to your repertoire.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that Dinnerly has a fixed number of times that they will deliver food to you, set at 3 times a week. This is the same across both plans, so make sure to keep that in mind when factoring your meal deliveries.

How Much Does Dinnerly Cost?

Dinnerly is a meal delivery service that advertises itself as being more affordable than other similar services, with each portion costing $4.99 per serving. The low price per portion is one of the ways that Dinnerly sells itself, though keep in mind that shipping is $8.99.  You will also be charged on a weekly basis automatically, coming to $38.93 for a 2 person box and $68.87 for a 4 person box.

Generally speaking, Dinnerly still works out to be cheaper than other services even with shipping included. Dinnerly manages to offer this service for less by doing a couple of things: first, they don’t spend money on advertising campaigns - instead they rely on word of mouth and sending free samples of Dinnerly meals to bloggers to review.

In addition to this, Dinnerly provides its recipes as digital only, though you can of course print them off yourself. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, however, as it means less clutter and an eco-friendly approach toward the meal delivery industry that meshes well with the digital age. The recipes will be sent to you via email but can also be found on their website during the relevant weeks they are offered.

After selecting the meal plan that works best for you, you will be required to provide your zip code so Dinnerly knows whether it can deliver to you or not, and your email address, so Dinnerly can contact you with offers and recipes. If you would prefer to unsubscribe from Dinnerly’s email offers, you can do so free of charge after signing up.

From there, you will be required to provide furtherinformation, including your address, name, phone number and so on. You willalso be able to customize your delivery here, including when the service willstart and at what time on which days Dinnerly will deliver food to you.

You canalso give special instruction if needed. For example, if you would preferDinnerly to leave the meal kits with your neighbors while you are away, thensimply let them know and they should be able to take care of you.

Payment is a relatively limited but straightforward process. As of 2019, Dinnerly only accepts credit cards and Paypal, taking either Visa or Mastercard. A little more variety would be appreciated here, but at least there is the option of paying with paypal, which allows you to use other payment methods so long as you go through them.

Finally, select the type of meals that you would like Dinnerly to deliver to your home. There are on average 6 meals to choose from each week, so there is always some flexibility in what you will be getting.

What to Keep in Mind with Dinnerly

One of the ways Dinnerly manage to keep costs low is by setting the number of meals delivered to three, as it’s more economical to send more meals per box. That means you can’t choose to have one, two, or more meals a week, but are stuck with three. While this is acceptable for most people - and means less meal planning and grocery shopping - a little more flexibility would be nice.

Conveniently, Dinnerly makes it easy to skip a week if you need a break or would like to pause the delivery service for a while. You will of course not be charged during weeks that you pause.

Unfortunately, Dinnerly does not retain their recipes after the week they are featured in passes, which means that the best and most popular ones aren’t around. This makes remaking recipes that you enjoyed in the past, or perhaps weren’t able to order, difficult. Hopefully this will be a feature introduced later in 2019.

Finally, all Dinnerly packaging is re-useable, recyclable or biodegradable. Not only that, but due to Dinnerly meals being much simpler and with fewer ingredients, there is less packaging in the first place.
